![]() That said the first volume definitely leaves you wanting more. ![]() The first volume serves mainly to establish the setting and the main cast of the series, tasks which it does well, but it leaves the plot on a not very thrilling note. Knowing where the series is going it’s a bit of a shock to return to the beginning and see how it all started. ![]() There are definitely some scenes that tempt and tease at the coming tone of the manga but the first four chapters are largely fun and light. It is – honestly – a bit of a rocky start. Most manga I’ve read starts out on the rougher end of the art department but, perhaps due to it not being her first work, Black Butler doesn’t suffer from this at all. Toboso has her own style and everything is lavish and elegant from the boys to the desserts. The action scenes are a bit messy (typical of manga) but the character and background drawings are some of the best I’ve seen. The art style is polished and beautiful from the very first volume – which is a rare feat. It is still (when I’m writing this post anyway) a continuing series which is wonderful longevity. Despite being published in 2007, Black Butler holds up as well, if not better, than many of the other classics from that time. This is a series I have been meaning to read for over a decade and finally, a friend pushed me into getting around to it. humans will drag others down in order to get what they want even in death."
